The Magic 10: How to Reach 10,000 Steps Every Day

Walking is a great way to get fit! There are so many ways you can enjoy it, and best of all, it’s completely free and easy to do! Whether you loath walking or simply can’t find the time, there are lots of fun and simple ways to increase your daily steps, so you can start reaping the benefits.

Why 10,000?

Walking 10,000 steps every day is thought to boost the health of your heart, strengthen your lungs and bones, grow your muscles, boost energy levels, stabilise blood sugar, as well as improving your mood. Sounds pretty good, right? So, how exactly do you achieve the magic 10? Because I know what you’re thinking, 10,000 steps sounds like a lot. Don’t worry though, because you don’t have to start walking 10,000 steps immediately, it’s better to gradually build it up to 10,000, which can be done by making simple lifestyle changes.

Depending on your lifestyle, it can be hard to get more active, especially if you’re sat at a desk all day. But walking can be easily integrated into your daily activities, so step by step, you can start achieving a healthier, happier you.

1. Take the stairs

Whether you’re at work or out shopping, make the journey up the stairs instead of the lift or elevator. It might take a bit longer, but it’ll be worth it.

2. Walk and talk

Taking a phone call? Take it outside and walk whilst you talk! This is an easy way to incorporate your steps into your day by effectively multi-tasking.

3. Park and walk

Park your car slightly further away from your destination and walk the extra distance. You could even save money on petrol and help the environment!

4. Use a pedometer

Count your steps using a pedometer. This acts as a great motivation to help achieve your goal.

5. Get a dog

If you don’t already have one and can’t already think of a great reason to get a dog, then this is certainly a good one! Dogs need walking at least 2 times a day, and they don’t walk themselves! Not only do they encourage you to walk more but they’re also great company.

6. Food shopping

Walking down the aisles of your local supermarket does more than just stock you up on food. Try taking an extra lap before going to the check out for an easy way to add to your steps, and who knows? You might even remember to pick something up that you’d forgotten the first time around.

7. Housework

From hoovering the house to mopping the floor, doing your house chores involves more steps than you realise. By making sure you get these done, you’ll not only be taking more steps, but you’ll also have a lovely clean home. Bonus!

8. Mow the lawn

Instead of waiting for someone else to do it, mow your lawn! This is a great way to add to your daily steps, and if it needs to be done anyway, you may as well benefit from it.

9. Wash the car

Rather than taking it through the car wash or leaving it to get dirty, take the time to wash it yourself and you’d be surprised at how many extra steps you can do.

10. Take a walk around the block

Get some fresh air and walk around the block. It doesn’t take much time and can be a great way of de-stressing after a long day.

11. Throw a party!

Perhaps not every day, but having a party will make sure you're on your feet. Dancing is an excellent way of adding to your steps, plus it’s really fun! You can enjoy it with friends or family, and you’d be surprised at how many steps you can do.

12. Skip the taxi

Whenever possible, skip the taxi ride. Not only is this great for adding to your daily steps, but it’s also better for the environment and you’ll save money, all whilst getting fit.

13. Bus stop

Get off at the wrong stop and walk the extra bit.

14. Get some comfortable shoes

Lots of walking can put strain on your feet if you’re not wearing comfortable footwear. Get some comfortable shoes to make walking easier and more enjoyable. Plus, what better excuse to get a new pair of shoes?

15. Walk on the spot

It’s as easy as that. Whether you’re making a cuppa or cooking in the kitchen, simply walk on the spot to keep you moving and increase your steps.

So, why not set yourself a challenge and incorporate these simple lifestyle changes into your daily life, and walk your way to a better, healthier you, one step at a time.
