Like corns bunions are generally caused by ill fitting footwear or unnatural walking action. However, some people may have a hereditary pre-disposition to developing them. No matter what the reason, bunions are painful and can cause extreme discomfort and real disability as toe joints become swollen.
A bunion is an inflamed swelling of the big toe joint where it meets the mid foot. Flexibility of the joint can be reduced due to the joint becoming enlarged, misshapen and hard.
The skin around the bunion will become red, stretched and shiny due to the pressure against the shoe. In some cases the area may fill with fluid and create a small bubble.
A bunion can lead to hammer toe, corns or blisters from friction as the inflamed toe moves sideways under or over the toe next to it. Misalignment of the toes caused by bunions can lead to great discomfort and problems in mobility and walking.
A Podiatrist will discuss the various forms of treatment available to relieve further discomfort or pain. Advice will also include the type of footwear worn and hosiery.
