Athletes foot is a fungal condition which easily spreads between the toes and other parts of the foot. It can be extremely irritating and itchy, as well as very contagious and hard to get rid of. If preventive measures are not taken the symptoms may persist or even reoccur.
When symptoms are spotted it is already too late, the infection is established. The most obvious is the itching sensation, although the area may also become white and moist. Skin will begin to peel and cracks develop. The symptoms are only made worse by scratching the infected area.
The pockets between the toes provide a warm moist breeding ground for the spores of this fungal infection to grow. If athlete's foot is not treated it can spread to other toes, the rest of the foot and even other body parts.
It is very contagious and can be easily spread on wet floors, towels, socks, and shoes. Spores from the fungus can lay dormant in socks and shoes for up to 4 weeks, making it a difficult infection to treat and cure.
Treatment involves examining the foot and cleansing particularly between the toes.
